Max
I was already in a sour mood after the morning I’d had. Work had made it worse. The judge had too many cases and failed to sign off on the search warrants. Numerous calls to his office and a lot of phone tag later, I’d been granted permission to pick them up—the following day. The APB had been put out, but so far, nothing had come up. Everything that could’ve gone wrong did. Plus, there was the factor that Crowe decided to choose today of all days to throw his weight around. I didn’t give a flying fuck that he was the de facto captain. He wasn’t a damn thing to me, and when he tried to insist he be kept up-to-date with my case, I all but told him to go fuck himself.
Of course, that resorted to me getting a call from Graves. I was sent to his office like a child visiting the principal, and I hated being reduced to feeling that way.
“What’s going on with you, Donohue? You like to tiptoe that fine line of protocol and ethics, but you’ve never been disrespectful until now,” Graves pointed out.
“Because Crowe is nothing but a body in a seat,” I growled. “I don’t give a shit if he’s been appointed the fill-in, but he is not my captain. Collins was.”
“Max,” Graves said with a sigh, “I miss Collins as much as you do.”
It was on the tip of my tongue to argue with him. I didn’t miss Collins. I never missed anyone. But I couldn’t say that when I knew it wasn’t true. Because if I were honest with myself, I did miss Collins. I missed our verbal sparring. The way he kept me on my toes. The way he put his faith in me and entrusted me to go with my instincts. I missed the way he believed in me and that I could do the job to the best of my ability. Fuck, I just missed him.
“But Max, this department has to go on and do everything they can to catch whoever is responsible for him not being with us anymore. I’ll be honest with you, and this will stay between us. If word gets out, I’ll deny it and give you desk duty for the foreseeable future. Do you understand?” I nodded. “I wasn’t ready to put someone in Collins’s office either. But the choice wasn’t mine. Crowe was the only person fit for the job, so the decision was made. We had to have someone in that office, Donohue.”
I was surprised at what he was saying to me, but I tried to keep my face neutral. “I understand your predicament.”
“Crowe knew coming into this position wouldn’t be easy for him, and he even expressed to me his hesitancy. Collins’s shoes are hard ones to fill.”
“They’ll never be filled,” I cut him off.
Graves held up his hand. “He’s trying, and I think he’s overcompensating to prove to everyone else he knows what he’s doing. Cut him some slack, Donohue.
